It is strange the way our story has been told to children as a warning against being greedy for sweets. The evils that can happen to young ones who are easily lured by the simple prospects of sweets, but this is all a misunderstanding or blatant falsehoods.
My stepmother was a vicious woman, and my father was too weak and too lonely to prevent the evils she perpetrated against my bother and I. Hansel and I tried to remain in the house for love of our father, but the cruelty soon became overwhelming. The prospect of leaving home without any means or knowledge, throwing ourselves at the mercy of a forest, that was an easier reality to endure than our stepmother. So, we left. We were not tricked. Why should we have wanted to remain in such a household? The comfort of shelter was an easy price to pay to escape from that woman.
So, with little more than a change of clothes and a stale loaf of bread, we ran into the dark forest. And the way was lit by pebbles. Shiny pebbles which glistened in the moonlight as if bathed in water. The dark forest, which we had always been told was a dangerous and frightening place, welcomed us. The pebbles took us deeper into the forest’s thrall. It surrounded us. Fireflies danced in the trees as if celebrating our presence. How could we deny the forest when it welcomed us so graciously?
