Portrait of a Queen – Enchantment

Portraits of queens hang heavily on walls of palaces and castles amongst intricately worked tapestries. Their presences are daunting. The canvases thick with paint are looming and ominous. Their stiff, elegant necks are layered with starched ruffles. Their caged hair is stacked high upone their heads to increase their stature. The deep hues of the paint reflecting the deep hues of velvet and silks they swath themselves in. But this opulence, this public display, this carefully crafted art is not a ruler’s real portrait. Instead, it is in people of her domain. Does she surround herself with people who are too intimidated to question her autocratic rule? Does she fill her royal command with mere servants to fulfill her command or does dissent and free thought thrive in her presence? And the people she does not have the time to see, who till the fields, weave the cloth, fire the blades, and barter the goods, are they content? Do they rest or do they quarrel? Does she incite peace and harmony or do her endless decisions cause derisiveness and pettiness? This is the true portrait of a queen; don’t let the artist fool you.
